Whose Job Is It?: A Story of Culture

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

IT’S EVERYONE’S JOB TO SATISFY EVERY CUSTOMER EVERY TIME

These words proudly hang in our back office, prominent with burgundy letters, elegant font and a goldenrod background. It embodies the spirit of teamwork we pride ourselves in maintaining. Moreover, it is a bold message at the heart of our hospitality and culture. Hanging in support of – and in the same office – are the ten pillars of Lodge Culture. Together, they are our primary source of inspiration for teamwork and leadership ideals. When Lodge employees were asked to explain what this quote means to them, they replied as follows:

Brady Wilkerson, Director of Rooms, said: “Nobody is above anything or any job. Bringing effort, accountability, ownership and selflessness everyday is key. We exercise autonomy here, which gives individuals the confidence they need to work successfully as part of a team and lead by example, no matter the circumstance.”

Leah Sarkinnen, our Catering Sales Manager, says similarly: “If there is a piece of trash on the floor, you pick it up. It is not solely housekeeping’s job. It is the personal ownership and responsibility that go beyond your job description and how much you care about every aspect of the whole experience.”

Krysten Sideras, Front Desk Agent, agrees stating: “Just because it’s technically one person’s job doesn’t mean everybody can’t and shouldn’t do it. If my team member is drowning in work, I am there to pick up the slack. We support each other in our individual and team duties because that is what we do here.”

In our eyes, the role of Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody are equal and it is evident we emphasize this logic interdepartmentally and hold each other accountable to this value everyday. This idea first came into existence in 1997 with the Stevenson Family, the beloved owners of the Lodge. As we rapidly approach our 20-year anniversary next year, it still remains at the core of who we are because we do culture the right way.
